Importance of Annual Health Check-Ups

Dr Poornima MBBS, DNB (RD)

While all of us are aware of the good practices of healthy living, only very few of us follow them.

Most people think that lack of sickness is being healthy, and hence, do not invest in their annual check-ups.But however healthy we look or feel, we really do not know what is happening within our bodies.

These check-ups help us identify certain health conditions and prevent them from getting worse or give us a cue about any lifestyle modifications that we must adopt. Here, I would like to recommend some of the basic tests any normal individual can undergo on an annual basis.

A regular blood work including complete blood count, HbA1c, liver and renal function tests, lipid profile, Vit D, Vit B, and prostate specific antigen in men can help identify any deficiencies, risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or prostatic cancer.

X-Ray of the chest, a treadmill test, and an ECG can better predict the risk for cardiovascular disease.

X-Ray mammogram in women above the age of forty is recommended to screen for any potential breast malignancy.

Ultra sonogram of the abdomen helps diagnose fatty liver and screening of the other solid abdominal organs.

These are the basic tests one may carry out on a regular basis.
